Reading and Language Arts
Is there a difference between these two things?
Well...I guess so. But I am willing to say that what used to just be called English in schools has become Language Arts.
Why they need a more vague name, I cannot begin to tell you, but it doesn't turn back into English until you get to high school. Then, suddenly you have to take, English I, English II, English III and English IV.
Based on some of the people I knew in college, there needed to be an English V-VIII. But, who am I to criticize? I was just stuck with them in every group activity ever! It was like the college professors intentionally stuck the homeschool kid with the lowest common denominator kids from the local government schools. (Sorry, I digress...)
It is just English with a fancy name.
Specifically, in the younger grades, you are focusing on getting them to actually be able to read...a strange goal, I know.
